Four Seasons of Lake Wedowee Fun

Last Updated 2/17/2025Posted in The Lake, Community, Wedowee

One the best things about Lake Wedowee after the obvious of course, (If you have to ask... it’s the water, silly) is the quaintness of our small towns, especially our unofficial namesake, Wedowee. Our cute little town is a modern day Mayberry(for the old timers) or even Stars Hollow (for the fast-talking, younger generation). Either way, Wedowee is loaded with charm and hospitality. And there is always something to do no matter the season: winter, spring, summer or fall!

Winter

It’s tempting to stay inside during these chilly months but when the temperatures drop, all you have to do is wait a few days and you will get a gloriously sunny day to enjoy. This is when we hit he birding trails (either at Fox Creek or Flat Rock) for hiking or mountain biking. When the water goes down, and the sun is out, you have the ability to walk the shoreline with views of the lake that are just incredible. The sun dances on the water in a spectacular way during the winter time and the air is oh so fresh and crisp. You also have a chance to spot little pieces of history when walking the shoreline, just remember to look and don’t keep!

The Flat Rock playground is open year round, so when the kids or grandkids get restless inside, throw on a coat and hit the trail for the best playground in the area. Bundle up for an early evening campfire and stargazing, as it's usually too hot for the bonfire the rest of the year.

Spring

Now that we are climbing out of winter, let’s get in the water! While Spring officially begins March 20, April 1 is when the water starts to come back to its wonderful and glorious full pool. We start to get really warm days here and there to dip your toes in. All the dogs will be the happiest now that the water and the sun have returned so that they can jump in and swim! Dust off the kayaks and paddle boards, for this is your moment. The mountain laurel on the exposed ridges around the lake is stunning.

April brings spring break visitors and Easter. Be on the lookout for the Easter bunny and sunrise services in town.

May boasts the biggest festival of the year in Wedowee — The Frog Level Music Festival on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. This year the date is May 24. The festival begins with a 5K in the morning, vendors during the day and live music on big stage in the evening. The headliner for this year’s festival will be named soon.

The Lake Wedowee Property Owners’ Association also hosts the annual Kids Fishing Day at Rice Pavilion. It usually coincides with the last day of school in Randolph County. It is open to kids under 16. Numerous prizes and a fun afternoon for all.

Summer

This is the season everyone thinks of when planning to be at the lake so take that into consideration when visiting. Flat Rock will have boats docked on the sandbar, music will be playing, drinks will be flowing and the ice cream pontoon will be outspreading cheer. Find a cove and get in the water and stay thereto survive the heat. All the restaurants will be alive and the shops will be full. You can rent kayaks and pontoons and even go on a paddle boarding excursion. It is peak summer and it is the lake at its best and loudest. The water will feel like an ocean with all the waves on the weekends. Summer here goes all the way through September as far as the heat goes. Life is good in the summer at the lake!

June brings Art on the Median and is always the second Saturday of June. This is a juried art show where local artisans and craftsmen and women display their abilities. Art on the Median has been a staple of Lake Wedowee for more than 15years and the East Alabama Arts Society uses money raised to fund scholarships to deserving students in the area.

July is all about celebrating America! Events include the Woodland Fireworks show with music, Clay County Arts League will have Summer Sizzle for the five Thursdays in July. Wedowee celebrates with a Patriot parade on US Highway 431on Saturday morning of the Holiday weekend.

August, soak up the last days of official summer before the kids go back to school. The Town of Woodland and its area civic club produce Vern Fest which is a tribute to Woodland native Vern Gosdin and is typically the first weekend in August while Concert in the Cove is a fundraiser for the Shellie Roden Memorial Foundation.

Fall

This may be my favorite time of the year in Wedowee. The temps are starting to drop and so is the humidity, but there are still sunny days left to paddle - in kayaks or on paddleboards. Local hiking starts to pick up on the Pinhoti Trail and at Cheaha State Park. You can walk outside without becoming drenched in sweat and enjoy the views as they change with the leaves dropping.

October is the second Art and Crafts on the Median and is the 2nd Saturday of the month. Local artisans and craftsmen show off their gifts and talents. It’s always a good time. There is Witches of Wedowee in mid October and also Wedowee trick or treating on the 30th this year for Halloween. Tanner Hospital has also hosted “Trunk of Treat” for the last several years.

November is when Wedowee gets magical. The stores all host Christmas Open House which will be November 6-8 this year and feature the latest Christmas decorations, gifts and other must haves for the season. Then the Friday after Thanksgiving, the town lights the Christmas trees and has the big tree lighting.

December is lots of fun in Wedowee. We have the Christmas parade on Main Street, retail open houses, the church services for Christmas and of course, the annual Fish Drop on New Year’s, complete with cookies, cocoa, and live music. There is always something to do — year round — in Wedowee. What an amazing place to be, no matter what months you are here!
