Stay Afloat: What You Need to Know About Boating Laws on Lake Wedowee
By Kelly Caldwell
As summer hits full stride and Lake Wedowee welcomes more boaters each weekend, it’s the perfect time to brush up on Alabama’s boating regulations and safety requirements. Whether you’re launching your pontoon for a sunset cruise or zipping across the water on a jet ski, knowing the rules helps keep you—and your fellow lake lovers—safe.
Boating Isn’t Just Fun—It’s a Responsibility
Lake Wedowee is a special place, and part of what makes it so enjoyable is the sense of community and shared respect for the water. That starts with boating safely and legally.
In Alabama, anyone age 12 or older is required by law to complete a state-approved boating safety course and obtain a Class V Vessel License to operate a motorized vessel on public waters like Lake Wedowee.
-
Ages 12–13 can operate a boat or personal watercraft only with adult supervision from someone 21 or older who is licensed and on board.
-
Ages 14 and older can operate a vessel solo once they’ve earned their license.
This license becomes an endorsement on your regular driver’s license or is issued separately if you don’t have one.
How to Get Your Boating License
-
Complete a Boating Safety Course
Take a course online (Boat-Ed is a popular provider) or attend an in-person class approved by ALEA and NASBLA. -
Visit a Driver License Office
Bring your certificate of completion and apply to take the exam (some courses offer it online as part of their program). -
Earn Your Endorsement
Once you pass the test and pay the fee, your Class V license will be added to your driver’s license or issued as a separate boater ID.
Already licensed in another state? Alabama may recognize your out-of-state certification—check with ALEA to be sure.
Life Jackets Save Lives—And They're Required
One of the most important (and most overlooked) boating laws in Alabama is the life jacket requirement.
-
Every boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person on board.
-
Children under the age of 8 are required to wear a life jacket at all times while the boat is underway.
-
Personal watercraft operators and passengers (like on Jet Skis or Sea-Doos) must wear a life jacket regardless of age.
-
Inflatable life jackets are not allowed for children under 16 or for use on personal watercraft.
Even strong swimmers can be caught off guard by a sudden fall, injury, or shock from cold water. A life jacket buys you time—and that can mean the difference between tragedy and rescue.
Tip: ALEA’s Marine Patrol regularly conducts safety checks on Lake Wedowee, especially during busy weekends and holidays. Make sure your boat is equipped and your passengers are informed.
Other Boating Reminders for Lake Wedowee
-
Boating Under the Influence (BUI): Operating a boat while impaired is illegal and dangerous. The laws and penalties are similar to DUI.
-
Vessel Registration: Don’t forget to register your vessel through the Alabama Department of Revenue before hitting the water.
