A Southern Gal's Guide to Christmas Without Losing Your Cool

Christmas in the South isn’t just a holiday—it’s a full production. Lights twinklin’, casseroles bakin’, and someone’s bound to burn the rolls while Pawpaw leans the tree just a little too far to the left. But sugar, don’t you worry. With a little planning and a dash of sass, you can pull off a Christmas that’s merry, bright, and low on meltdowns.

Your Don’t-Y’all-Dare Forget Christmas Countdown

• Two Weeks Before

• Finish that shopping list—and yes, even for the cousin you only see once a year.
• Stock the pantry with baking supplies and cocoa mix before the good stuff sells out.
• Pull out your decorations. If the lights are tangled, pour yourself some eggnog first.

• One Week Before

• Wrap gifts early, sugar. Don’t let Santa be the only one up past midnight on Christmas Eve.
• Plan your menu. Every Southern table needs something cheesy, something sweet, and something fried.
• Clean out the fridge to make room for the onslaught of leftovers and desserts.

• Christmas Eve

• Prep what you can—vegetables chopped, casseroles ready to bake, tables set and twinkling.
• Charge your camera. You’ll want proof when the dog steals a biscuit or the kids unwrap too soon.
• Lay out Christmas pajamas and make the house smell like cinnamon and sugar. Instant holiday magic.

• Christmas Morning

• Brew the coffee before anyone’s allowed near the presents.
• Toss the breakfast casserole in the oven and sneak a cinnamon roll for quality control.
• Remember to breathe. It’s okay if the bows are crooked and the cat’s in the tree again.

Games and Gatherings: How to Keep Spirits Bright

Ornament Exchange: Everybody brings one ornament to trade—white elephant style. The louder the laughter, the better the gift.

Left-Right Christmas Game: Wrap a small prize and pass it around as someone reads a silly story full of ‘lefts’ and ‘rights.’ Chaos guaranteed.

Hi, Low, Ho Ho Ho: Like Hi, Low, Buffalo—but Christmas style. Share your favorite moment, your biggest flop, and one funny surprise from the season.

Christmas Karaoke: Nobody expects Mariah-level talent. Bonus points if you make Grandma sing ‘Jingle Bell Rock.’

Keep It Merry, Not Messy

• Delegate, darling. Let everyone bring a dish. The word ‘potluck’ is Southern for ‘teamwork.’
• Turn on the music. A good playlist will drown out kitchen chaos and family chatter alike.
• Don’t apologize for shortcuts. If the fudge came from the freezer section, just smile and add sprinkles.
• End the night with gratitude. A toast, a prayer, or just a round of ‘what made you smile today.’ Keeps the spirit right where it belongs.

Southern Shortcuts: Christmas Edition

Now listen here: Christmas cooking doesn’t have to mean chaos. The secret is knowing when to make it from scratch and when to fake it like a pro. These little shortcuts will keep your table merry, your kitchen clean, and your guests wondering how you pulled it all off.

Kelly’s Cocoa Bar: Skip the fancy mixes. Stir together store-bought cocoa, a splash of cream, and top it with homemade whipped cream and crushed peppermint. Instant joy in a mug.

Bless-Your-Heart Chocolate Dream Pie: Store-bought crust, chocolate pudding, and that same homemade whipped cream (heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, beat ‘til soft peaks). Rich, simple, and Southern as can be.

“If it’s got butter, bourbon, or love, it’s Christmas in the South.”

Crowd-Favorite Christmas Veggie Salad:
Take a store-bought vegetable tray (ditch the cherry tomatoes—keep the broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and celery). Chop it all up. In a bowl, mix one packet of Italian dressing mix with a cup of mayonnaise and pour it over the veggies. Top with shredded cheddar cheese and bacon bits. Chill until serving. It’s colorful, crunchy, and gone before you can say “Merry Christmas, y’all.”

Fancy Pecan Pie from the Freezer: Warm a frozen pecan pie, drizzle it with caramel sauce, and top with whipped cream. Nobody’s questioning it.

Bourbon Cheer: Pour yourself a little holiday happiness—mix two ounces of good bourbon with a drizzle of honey, a squeeze of orange, and a splash of ginger ale. Serve it over ice with a cinnamon stick for garnish. Sweet, simple, and guaranteed to keep your spirits bright.
