Why Wedowee is so Unique
Wedowee is indeed a special place. On the map, of course, there is a big, beautiful lake and rivers that call us to the water, and there are hiking and walking spots that will stun with their beauty. Zoom in closer and you’ll find fun shopping and hometown non-chain restaurants that win awards. But walk Main Street or visit the places to eat, shop and play, and you will meet people who are local and people who have moved here from all over. The people are what seal the deal. A slower pace of life, kindness and care for each other, a willingness to give back to the community - all of that exists in our little slice of heaven. Here is what our readers had to say:
Janice Flournoy
“I grew up here and like so many moved away after graduating high school. I returned forty plus years later to the same place I left but a different landscape. The changes in Wedowee to me are like a remodel. We had multiple grocery stores, automobile dealerships, one bank, one lawyer whose office was in the courthouse, clothing stores to name a few. Moving back has kept those memories alive. For me, just waking up in the morning to the beautiful sunrises, the sounds of nature, a place to connect my inner spirit with things much larger than I ever dreamed. The people, those who live here and those who visit. The visions that have changed the landscape. Doesn’t matter where you travel, you meet people who know about Lake Wedowee. The town of Wedowee and Lake Wedowee are woven together. There is no better place to call home.”
Kim Smith
“I LOVE coming to town and shopping at the best shops around. Many times when I go back to Georgia, I am always asked where did you get that! Best shopping ever. Love our Lake Life.”
Judy Hurley Colston
“It’s unique/special for me because I’m 6th generation here & my ancestors go back to the 1830s. It was paradise to me when my family had a cabin on the river, no electricity, & no running water."
Judy Robinson Richardson
"The community itself! The sweetest people you'll EVER meet! We do love Lake Wedowee!"
Danna Deering Ely
"The people in Wedowee haven't lost sight of what is important in life: small town values, faith, family, simple living, community. There is a sweetness here that just can't be beat."
Janice Lynn Waits Eller
“The hearts of the residents: Loving, accepting, generous, and GENUINE! We were drawn here by the beautiful lake, but the people are the reason we are still here!”
Tammy Craft Spratlin
“I have lived here my entire life! Before my family built a home on the lake we had a camper at Lakeside! So many memories were made enjoying the lake as a child! Now I get to continue to love the lake with my daughter and granddaughter! It is home to all of us! Nothing better than Lake Life!
Jayden Entrekin
“I think it’s a dream come true for anyone to live in a town that’s viewed as a getaway spot. Kind people, beautiful nature and a permanent vacation.....how can you beat that?!!?”
Veronica Hutcheson Bailey
“I've had a home on that beautiful lake since 1996. I have always referred to Wedowee as my little piece of heaven on earth. It is still a quiet small town, but has lots to offer.”
Ron Mattocks
“The downtown, beautiful countryside, the lake, and the friends you have here. Just a damn good place to live.”
Laura Holtzclaw
I love the quiet (on weekdays), the lake, and the wildlife
Debbie Prescott Thigpen
“Although we have always lived nearby, we were drawn here for the lake life. Now, it’s the quaint town, slower pace, beauty, prideful residents and friendships that keep us here.
I think Wedowee does such a great job keeping the community engaged!"
John Harold Harmon
