🏡 A Quick History of Wedowee
Before it was a lake town, Wedowee was home to the Creek Nation, a Native American tribe whose legacy still lives on in the town’s name—“Wedowee” means “old water” in the Creek language. Following the Indian Removal Act of the 1830s, European settlers began moving into the area, and the town of Wedowee was officially incorporated in 1836.
Historically a farming community known for its cotton production, Wedowee has held on to its small-town charm even as it's grown and adapted over the years.

Fast forward to the 1970s, when the need for hydroelectric power and better flood control led the Alabama Power Company to envision a massive reservoir along the Tallapoosa River.
Construction on the R.L. Harris Dam—named after Rother L. "Judge" Harris, an Alabama Power director and vice president of electric operations—began in 1974 and was completed in 1983. Once the dam was operational, it created what we now know as Lake Wedowee—a reservoir that spans over 9,870 acres with more than 367 miles of shoreline.
